Bethel is on the western side of Alaska, about 40 miles inland from the Bearing Sea, on the Kuskokwim River and 400 miles west of Anchorage.

The only way in and out of Bethel is an hours flight from Anchorage all year round. During the warmer months people get out by boat and the winters the Kuskokwim River turns into a road so cars and snow machines can get to the local villages.

Many people rely on substance living. Fishing and hunting moose and bear along with gathering berries is a way for many people to get food.

Mushing is a major past time here in Bethel. The Kuskokwim 300 (K300) is a short distance sprint that occurs in Janurary every year. We have multiple local musher who race along with Iditarod winners like John Baker and Lance Macky.
